Korea vs. Venezuela

Wednesday, September 3rd, 2008

Last weekend was pretty fun. I got to go to the Royals game Thursday night and Chiefs game Friday night for free. Saturday we went fishing and Saturday evening we got to have BBQ at the Filling Station with the Whiteheads. It was great that the games didn’t cost me anything but the highlight of the weekend or the one thing worth noting is how Yohan got clobbered in the head with a line drive foul ball! Thats right. Alberto Callaspo tried to take Korea down but Korea stood its ground. Its ok he isn’t dead or anything… but it did bleed. When he got up to go to get first aid assistance the crowd cheered for him. He was a good sport to take one for the team.

Video here. You can see the hit that came flying right at us. Although it doesn’t show Yohan and they don’t even mention it.

Jet rocks with dad

Last weekend dreamer played a reunion benefit show for Nick Martin and his family. It went pretty well. Dreamer played well for only practicing a few times and of course Jet found out his dad can shred. We had a good time and decided with the effort that was placed into remembering the songs we should play once or twice more. I’ll “promote” those here so anyone who is interested can get a heads up. Kyle took a few pictures.

$8,300 was raised for the Martins through the auction, food, and various donations. A lot of money that I wish could go along way but I’m thinking it won’t go that far. I believe they intend to buy a van with the money and I imagine those vans with wheelchair access aren’t cheap. Continue to keep the Martins in your prayers and remember to pray for Nick.

It Is No Wonder

My coworker and good friend Sara has a side of her she doesn’t reveal much. She is an excellent poet. To be quite honest its one of those things that just reveals itself unexpectedly. For the longest time she had a blog but wouldn’t reveal(theres that word again) to anyone. I thought that was a little creepy…but its not. Check it out. The one below is about Christ return but I didn’t expect it because she is possibly converting to Islam(read here and here)….hmmm…or so she says. (more…)

A few years ago friends and I came up with a game we like to call Snake Pit.  The game is pretty simple.  Its similar to ultimate frisbee except the method of movement is riding longboards.  At the begining of most summers we conclude we are going to play this game often.  As it happens not one game of Snake Pit was commenced in 07.  I think we are getting to old but I’m going to get reamed for saying it.  Anyways I created a google doc asking them to collaborate with me defining the rules and regulations.  I said,

Anyone able to define the snake pit game…any rules?

This is what they came up with…. (more…)

The Happy Couples

Sunday, October 14th, 2007

This weekend was fairly eventful for not being eventful at all.  Ever had one of those weekends?  Shauna and Shaunas manfriend are now the happily engaged couple.  Morée and I are excited for them and we are even more excited that we have an opportunity to convince them to skip having a big ceremony and go to Hawaii.  If we can’t convince them we’ll have to start into Spencer and Haley…I mean the couple “who cannot be named“!

Last night was one of Grams last horras as a single man.  We went to the Wilco concert in the CrossRoads.  It was a good show and a good venue.  Before we went there we set out to Buffalo Wild Wings.  Ordered up 100 wings in a variety of flavors.  An excellent time was had there eating wings and watching several games.  It was good to be able to hang out with some guys other than the norm.  Whatever that means.  Most things said last night cannot be repeated unless of course you ask.  At which point you’ll be reminded that it was a bachelor party.  Context is everything!

Andrew Bird opened for Wilco.  Somehow this guy has totaly gone under my radar.  He played (mostly) violin and it was captivating.  Which was making me laugh a little inside because just the other day the neighbor boy came over to show us his violin.  Of course I was polite to him but inside I was thinking, “what type of father lets his kid come home with a violin?  Thats almost as bad as a flute.”  Well now I almost wish my dad had done the same.  Anybody that can make his violin sing like Andrew Bird is an exception to whatever sterotype I have built up.  I’m not going to try to explain what Andrew sounded like you’ll just have to investigate on the WWW.

Wilco was as expected for the most part which is a good thing.  You can find a basic review here.  Some of the highlights besides the music was the sarcasm Tweedy offered regarding the crowds boos for the nearby and obvious Elton John concert.  The Sprint Center had its first concert last night with the bloated EJ cutting the ribon so to speak.  What seemed like a dozen spotlights flying threw the sky was quite the site to behold.  The best part was the cool kids(at Wilco) were not jealous of the Sprint Center attendees.  There were times where I felt like Nels Cline(newest guitar player) didn’t fit with the rest of the group but his abilities were so unbelievable that I just laid any opinions that might interfere to rest.  I felt like my legs were about to give out when Wilco almost played a 4th encore.  That would have killed me and IMHO it would have left the crowd a little sour.  But really who knows?  Nobody else had to be at work at 7am the next day like me.

My 3 and a half day weekend is over.  I spent most of the weekend hanging out with Derick when I could.  Several of his friends were usually around keeping him company.  Wenesday we went to the Plaza.  Ran by Cheeseburger Jerry, Apple store, and to a movie.  We saw Balls of Fury which looked pretty hilarious in the trailer.  It was a total let down.  Don’t go see it.  Thursday I can’t remember what happened. Hmm wonder why that is?  Friday we left the ICU for Culvers…mmm Butter Burger. Went out for some AMF bowling.  That was fun…and loud and dark.  Definitely didn’t help the dizzy feeling this whole situation gives ya.  I don’t think I scored over 100 either game.  I was going for the crowd pleasers and for the most part was sucessfull.  The highlights(for me at least) was when the jukebox played ACDC’s ”Shoot to Thrill” and Joe Diffie’s “John Deer Green”.  I payed an extra buck to hear ACDC’s song play immediately.  We left before we got to hear the rest of the song choices.  We went back to my house for a PlayStation3 session that lasted till 3am.  I’m still trying to recover. Saturday I wasn’t able to get up there as early as I would have liked because Morée was at work.  We got there late.  Fortunately we showed up for the circus courtesy of Derick and gang.  They concocted quite the art installation.  There were patio chairs and tables leaning, dangling, and seemingly frozen in the strangest positions.  Quite the site to behold.  I guess they got bored with that.  They then decided to make a chariot.  The 4 wheels were the gigantic patio tables…yes all of this outdoors just outside ICU. :)  Did I mention the 30 tacos Haley brought? haha

As far as Nick goes its still bad.  Many things have happened since my initial post that he was in an accident.  He is still in the coma and still on a life support.  The damage to his brain stem seems to be the focus.  Doctors are running reflex test every hour.  These test determine what the status of his brain stem is.  I believe he has responded to these a few times but not 100%.  I’m sure some part of this is not completely accurate so don’t quote me.

Over at Facebook someone created a “Pray for Nick” group.  It is great seeing how many members the group has.  Last I saw it was over 600.  The comments and pictures posted are warming and good reminders of the impact Nick has had on us thus far.  I would link to it but the site is banned here at work.  Plus you probably already know about it.

This is going to be tough no matter how it turns out.  Obviously continue to pray for this situation.  Its good to keep in mind that the most difficult part will likely be whatever the outcome is.   It is great to see the outpouring of support from friends and family but we need to remember that this will be needed in a extended fashion.  Nothing is worse than the load the family will be handed after this and its important that the Family of God is there in that time.

Nick “the mexican' Martin

Nick was in a horrible car accident early this morning. You can read about it here.  He has a severe amount of head trauma.  There is swelling that we are hoping will go down.  Nick is extremely strong willed and steadfast but he needs prayer.  Please pray for our brother Nick Martin and his family.  I don’t know what to say….we just don’t want to lose this one.  I know what he would say to do…put your faith in God.

Black on Black Red on Black Red on Red

We have some serious decisions to make so lets get to work.  I’m sick of this theology discussion and talk of scripture that enlightens ones mind.  Lets talk some serious crap.  Yohan is about to purchase a Ducati Monster. Thing is he can’t decide what color combination to get. He said he wants black on black because he wants something thats tuff looking but likes the red options too. I was thinking he was insecure in his manhood and thought he had to get the black to make sure he wasn’t viewed as a flake.(my words not his). The red bars over the engine looks pretty 80’s to me but I could see thats what he might be going for. I thought the red was pretty sweet too particularly giving it a littles 70’s flare against the white “Ducati”. Not really sure if 70’s and Korean go together well but you could surprise me. I mean can you imagine a Korean dude riding an Italian bike? I couldn’t either but its Yohan and he is living out the rebellious counter culture that JC started. Yohans controversial like that. He likes to blow your mind. Forget whatever stereotypes you racist people have in mind of little asian men flying around on mopeds and scooters. Yohan is like Daniel Boon only more modern-er than before…and without the coonskin cap. Yeah thats right he can tame a MONSTER or a Nalubuff!
One last thing to mention. We need some votes from the ladies. After all thats who he is trying to impress. Anywho take a stab and vote for your favorite.
Sorry, there are no polls available at the moment.
