Colin Firth Interview

Eventually a second part to my last post is coming. Until then I liked this short interview with Colin Firth.  His description of the stutter he portrayed was spot on with what I stated in the previous post. Mostly he acted the stammer with “blocks” as opposed to repetitive sounds. Which is speech therapist terminology that is basically saying the words are stuck but there is no phonation or sound. I have often felt it was similar to how he described in this interview that those blocks feel like you are drowning. Seems like a stretch but not really if you think about how it affects breathing simultaneously. Colin also mentions that the king didn’t conquer the stammer. I mentioned that point in my last post and again its important because people assume thats something that can happen if you just try. Showing the fact that the king did try and still had a problem really speaks to the authenticity of the movie. They could have wrote the movie with a cure at the end where he never struggles again but that would have taken away from the raw appeal that it has. I’m glad they chose to tell the truth as opposed to a lie that would have left the non stuttering public to believe that stutters are just lazy or that they choose to be that way.

Oh and I guess I don’t need to raise awareness about the movie anymore since it won Best Picture, Best Actor, Best Director, Best Screenplay, Best Ensemble

Hi! You commented on my blog several years ago, so I thought I’d check in on yours. I love this post. I’m so very tired of having to explain to people that my son (who is now 9) is not likely to outgrow his stutter. It’s something he can manage with some effort, but it’s obviously hard work. If he had to do that every minute of every day, I think he’d stop talking altogether. Thanks for the blog!
