Eating Mercifully

Posture.  That word has become so important to me as of late.  No I haven’t been struggling with back problems.  I still slouch in a chair for 12 hours a day.  I’ve realized that in many ways I had been floating through life without a posture, if you will, on many issues.  Probably most visible in the areas of Food, Consumerism, Children,…

Lets take hunting for example.  For me this is largely a cultural issue.  Meaning that either you hunt because culturally you were raised to do so or you don’t.  I only know of one person who actually hunts and processes the meat for consumption purposes and I respect that.  So to cut to the point.  My posture regarding hunting is that I’m not interested in it.  Without criticizing people that do hunt merely for sport lets just say I don’t get it.  Even to some extent hunting for provision I don’t get.  I mean a cow taste much better than a deer and is a heck of a lot slower too.  All of that to say I like shooting guns and I imagine hunting down an animal for a kill is a rush.

I know it probably sounds ironic but most of these “postures” I’m referring to are in my mind Biblically based.  Pretty soon a documentary will be coming out that will challenge your posture or lack of posture regarding food and meat consumption.  Gardening has exploded but I imagine it will only continue to do so after Food, Inc gets distributed more widely.

I’m a little embarrassed to say that at one point in my life I actually thought eating meat was Christian.  example: meat consumption=american=christian.  I recall a time when I couldn’t have understood how a Christian was also a vegetarian.  God told us to have dominion and blow stuff up right?  But times have changed and while I’m not even close to wanting to be a vegetarian I sympithize with individuals who have made that choice based on their faith.

I’m horrible at getting to the point in a timely fashion…  The Humane Society of America has a series of videos that are directed at the “Faithfull” titled Eating Mercifully.  You don’t understand how a Christian can call eating an issue of Justice for animals?  Then I highly recommend you watch the series at their site. Also I should mention that one of the video features Greg Boyd who some might consider an “emerging” voice in Christianity.
