This year I tried three different methods to start seeds. As you can see one started out a little more successful than the other.

Randzigs mix – As mentioned I made my own mix, which involves mixing compost(as many types as possible), peat moss, and vermiculite. I even went as far as to cook the dirt to rid it of any bacteria or fungi that would be harmful. While I feel this was a good idea it ended up failing due to my lack of patience. I sabotaged it 2 times because I felt that I had done something wrong due to the lack of results. Ultimately I was wrong as several of the trays that I left alone began to see seedlings.
Peat Pellets – While at the GrassPad I came across Peat Pellets. Remember I’m a newbie and I hadn’t heard of these before. Peat Pellets are circular shaped “pellets” of compressed peat that come in various sizes. You stick them in warm water and they grow. Simply drop a seed down in middle and you are set. Very easy and very effective. This method is much more toddler friendly. They can drop the pellets in the water and they can drop the seeds in the pellets. Real simple. These ended up being the most expensive of the three methods.
Soiless Mixture – I finally caved in and bought the Grass Pad soiless mixture. It is essentially the same thing I was trying to create at the beginning. I probably should have just bought it originally(I’d be eating salads right now). The bag was something like $2.50 so it was worth trying.
Its worth mentioning all three of these methods are simply mediums for the seed to germinate in. The reason I didn’t use miracle grow or something similar is because seeds have all the nutrients they need contained in them. They do not need fertilizer until they show their first true leaves. Plus we are doing this as organic as possible. How bouts you?
