I’m not much into the band Switchfoot but I was reading this interview with Jon Foreman and something he said really struck a “chord” with me.
I think that’s something I can relate to in our times, when the church has become a business. You’ve got CDs and magazines and all these ‘Christian’ things. The question is, not only as a consumer but as a human being, how do you find your soul and dig underneath the veneer?
Some people have no problems with the institutional consumer oriented church. I bet those people have an easier time just going to church and being “involved”. I actually kinda wish I was that way…the way I currently am doesn’t mesh well with the status quo. Its true I don’t go to church because I work on Sundays but I gotta say I’m not exactly sure what choices I would make even if I could go. That is an all together different post. Regardless Jon hit on a relevant point. Consumerism is a problem outside the church and often churches preach this. Yet at the same time often churches feed our desire to consume.
