This blog post “5 Reasons Why Consensus Sucks” by Tony Morgan really hit the spot for me. In my experience of playing in a band for almost a decade, involvement at church, projects in work …looking for a consensus is like dying a slow death.
Point 5 really resonated with me:
It discourages people from dreaming big dreams. Want to neuter the creative-thinkers and entrepreneurs and visionaries in your organization? Force them to reach consensus with the rest of the crowd.
Now I understand working with people to solve problems but with the bigger over arching issues I’ve found its best when people differ to let them differ. The times where I tried to be diplomatic were the times I was the most miserable. Is this a bad thing? What do you think?
