
When do you think this color photo was taken? If you had to guess you’d probably be wrong. It was taken in 1909. Here is what the original looked like. I think the original may be even better because you are able to see how the process involved used three different colors. It reveals more about the technology at the time and gives it an authentic aged look.
I don’t know why I like old historical photos so much…but I do. Maybe its the mystery that the pictures bring about? Maybe its the connection to the past and my place in this world? I’ve posted before about Shorpy, I love that site and its contents. Recently I found information about Sergei Mikhailovich Prokudin-Gorskii (1863-1944), Russian photographer who pioneered color photography. Some info about him is here. Some of his pictures were bought and restored by the Library of Congress in 1948. Many of the 122 that were restored by Library of Congress for its 2000 exhibition can be seen at The Empire That Was Russia. Check it!
