I recently read the excerpt above from this church website. I visited the website linked in an article because I heard about some bad things(for lack of better words) happening there. When I read this excerpt above my heart and mind just began pulsating with frustration and anger. Obviously they have a name for this type of heresy but when its a church that is fairly close by it just feels different.
Following Jesus is definitely wise but I find no reason to believe that following Jesus is equated to ultimate success in your home life, health, career, finances, and wildest dreams coming true. That makes it sound like following Jesus is just an ulterior motive to attain greatness in this world. Sure I understand that when you seek God you are seeking ultimate truth and wisdom but I’m sure people have lived their whole lives crying out to God and never had a penny to their name. It must have been because they didn’t attend this church. Umm yeah did you get the memo? For ultimate human bliss go here.
The truth is Jesus didn’t come to make the widowed, the orphaned, the diseased, to be wealthy, healthy, and successful. Of course he didn’t proclude that but that was not his mission. His mission was to restore the broken. Ultimately Jesus is in business of restoring his people and his Kingdom.
Do you think I’m having the wrong attitude about this?
When you realize your humanity and that life isn’t just about finding ultimate success in your career, family, finances you come to the point where you have to say, “God is enough”. That is when God gets the most glory. (Piper says it the best below.) God is enough even for people with a thorn in the flesh. It is just extremely difficult to admit it when your hiding an open wound with one hand and smiling waving “hi” with the other.
Like Piper I also hate the prosperity gospel. I don’t know anything about that church in Springfield other than what I read on their website so I apologize to my cousins who live there if that is your church. But if thats what the church preaches then you should run…fast.
