The King was able to come and split time in half(BC- AD)… This King was able to sing music so profound that there is His Style… and then there is everything else. Everyone knows Elvis in his later years was a sucker for Gospel music. But before he released any of his Gospel albums and was “Crying in the Chapel” this theologian was reasoning and contextualizing.
In these proverbs the writer is lamenting the woes accompanied by a “Hard Headed Women“. He writes that a “hard headed women is a thorn in the side of a man“, which is a blatant reference to The Apostle Paul. All this time we thought The Apostle Paul had some sort of physical ailment that was a major hinderance. As it ends up Priscilla and/or Lydia were a real pain.
The writer cites numerous examples:
- Eve, who held Adams perfect trust led him into believing that eating the apple was ok and single handedly put all men to toil.
- Delilah, who again had her mans(Samson) trust, gave away the key to his weakness making him vulnerable to his enemies.
- Jezebel, the Queen who turned her man(Ahab) away from God thus leading all of the Israelites into worship of Baal.
Perhaps most compelling example is from the writers own life. In the last verse you can see that his very own women has a “head like a rock”. This characterization shows not that his women has a head of rock but that the subject is difficult in personality. One could deduce, “She may as well have a head made of rock because that girl is tripping.” Lastly the writer expresses that he would in fact be devastated eternally if his stone headed companion left him. This is a universal theme that men are left vulnerable often times by no one other than to whom they have given their devotion.
As you can see before there was Relevant, Emerging conversations, Rob Bell, Christian Music, Elvis was translating The Bible and its relevant yet ancient stories to a culture that could only focus on his swaying hips. For most men complaining like this will not gain you favor particularly if your women is hard headed. However your women may temporarily entertain this theory a little more with a some hip swaying and karaoke set. Its words flow quickly in a syncopated fashion so… Good luck!
Hard Headed Women
Well a hard headed woman,
A soft hearted man
Been the cause of trouble
Ever since the world began.
Oh yeah, ever since the world began
A hard headed woman been
A thorn in the side of man.
Now adam told to eve,
Listen here to me,
Dont you let me catch you
Messin round that apple tree.
Oh yeah, ever since the world began
A hard headed woman been
A thorn in the side of man.
Now samson told delilah
Loud and clear,
Keep your cotton pickin fingers
Out my curly hair.
Oh yeah, ever since the world began
A hard headed woman been
A thorn in the side of man.
I heard about a king
Who was doin swell
Till he started playing
With that evil jezebel.
Oh yeah, ever since the world began
A hard headed woman been a thorn in the side of man.
I got a woman,
A head like a rock.
If she ever went away
Id cry around the clock.
Oh yeah, ever since the world began
A hard headed woman been
A thorn in the side of man.

[...] Every so often I come across a song that really speaks to me. As songs can do they get stuck in your head. This song has done that and gotten stuck in my heart. Its a reminder for how I want to live my life even though I don’t always act out in ways that correspond with the ideas. Plus it was sung by the first Rock Star ever. [...]
